Local activists have formed the Ames Visibility Brigade. They have organized a recurring event. We encourage our members to bring signs and posters and join this effort. See the goals and guidelines below.
Thursdays 4 pm - 5:30 pm
and
Saturdays at 10 am - 11:30 am
Bandshell Park, Ames
Join us as we share with the Ames community our concerns about what is happening in our country. We will gather and show up weekly, week after week, to stand for our democracy.
There is safety in numbers, so we do not want people out there alone. A single person is too easy a target for harassment, so plan to go with at least one other person.
Guidelines for the Brigade
A MESSAGE CONVEYED IN A RESPECTFUL, NONCONFRONTATIONAL MANNER HAS A BETTER CHANCE OF BEING HEARD
Have at least one other person with you. If there isn’t anyone else, call a friend and have them join you or come back another day
Be polite and respectful to anyone who might wish to talk with you. DO NOT engage in arguments. If you feel uncomfortable with an interaction, trust your gut and leave the area and if indicated, call the police.
Do not yell at passing traffic, even if they yell at you - remember “when they go low, we go high”
Do not wave your sign into the street.
For safety purposes, please stay on the sidewalk. (We can legally be on City property including sidewalks and the park.)
We legally must leave space for people to walk past us, so you can step back into the park to let them pass.
REMEMBER, WE CAN ONLY BE ON PUBLIC PROPERTY NOT ON PRIVATE PROPERTY. PUBLIC PROPERTY INCLUDES THE SIDEWALK AND THE RIGHT OF WAY (BETWEEN STREET AND SIDEWALK) AND CITY PARKS
FOR PEOPLE’S SAFETY AND SO WE DON’T INTERFERE WITH VISIBILITY FOR DRIVERS, WE ASK YOU TO PLEASE STAY ON THE SIDEWALKS.
